How much a stamped concrete patio costs in Utah cannot be answered responsibly from a photo, a neighborhood, or square footage alone. The quote changes with the shape of the work, what must be removed, how crews and concrete reach the placement, what supports the slab, how water leaves the area, and which decorative system the owner selects.
This is a planning guide, not a project estimate. It helps a Park City or Summit County buyer assemble the inputs needed for comparable quotes. A project estimate starts after the contractor measures the site, reviews the actual conditions, confirms design responsibility, and records the included work and exclusions. There is no universal per-square-foot number that represents every stamped patio.
Start With Measured Area and Geometry
Begin with a dimensioned sketch instead of a rough area from an online map. The contractor should verify the measured area and geometry, including curves, narrow sections, inside corners, steps, landings, borders, drains, and transitions to doors or existing concrete.
Geometry affects more than material quantity. It can change forming time, finish sequencing, joint placement, edge work, and the number of separate placements. Record features that interrupt the slab, such as posts, utility covers, planters, outdoor-kitchen elements, or future hot-tub and equipment zones. Their structural requirements belong with the project designer when applicable.
Separate Demolition, Haul-Off, Access, and Mobilization
A quote for a clear soil area is not the same scope as a replacement patio. When existing concrete, pavers, stone, unsuitable fill, stairs, or landscaping must be removed, ask the quote to identify:
- demolition and saw-cut limits;
- protection for the house, utilities, irrigation, and surfaces that remain;
- excavation, loading, haul-off, and disposal responsibility;
- restoration outside the new patio limits;
- unknown conditions that would require written approval before added work.
Access should be described before pricing placement. Gate widths, slopes, overhead restrictions, soft ground, occupied areas, truck staging, and the distance from the concrete truck to the forms can change the equipment and labor plan. The quote should say whether concrete can be placed directly or whether another delivery method is planned.
Mobilization should also be visible. A patio divided into phases, separated work zones, or return trips for demolition, base preparation, placement, washing, sealing, or protection is different from one continuous operation. Ask which mobilizations and return visits are included.
Define the Subgrade, Base, and Drainage Scope
The support below the slab should be described, not hidden inside a single line for "concrete work." A useful quote states the excavation boundary, treatment of disturbed or unsuitable subgrade, specified base material, planned compacted depth, and who confirms that support is ready before placement.
Drainage begins with elevations at doors, walls, steps, drains, landscape edges, and adjacent slabs. The project team should define the approved drainage path and construction controls for the actual site rather than improvise them on placement day.

State the Slab and Reinforcement Design
Slab thickness, thickened edges, steps, load zones, isolation details, and reinforcement are project design inputs. A quote should name the design source and state what the contractor is carrying rather than applying one generic detail to every patio.
Ask for the reinforcement type, placement, support method, laps or connections shown by the design, and treatment at openings and transitions. Also identify who supplies drawings and who resolves conflicts with foundations, retaining walls, columns, stairs, utilities, or other structural elements. Specify the Decorative Finish System
"Stamped concrete" is a category, not a complete finish selection. The quote should identify the pattern, color method, release method, border or banding details, surface texture, sample or mockup process, and the named sealer or other finish components. It should also say who approves the appearance and when that approval is due.
Decorative complexity can affect layout, placing sequence, stamping time, edge finishing, washing, joint coordination, and return visits. Coordinate Joints With the Pattern
The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association's CIP 6 on joints in slabs on grade explains that concrete changes dimension with moisture and temperature and that joints should be planned before construction. For a decorative patio, the functional joint plan and the visible pattern must be coordinated rather than treated as separate decisions.
Ask the quote to identify contraction, isolation, and construction joints; panel geometry; the jointing method; and who owns the timing. Columns, walls, footings, corners, steps, drains, and adjoining slabs can all affect the layout. Reinforcement does not turn the patio into a crack-free surface, so the proposal should describe jointing responsibilities instead of making a universal performance promise.
Include Curing and Weather Protection
The American Concrete Institute notes that entrained air improves resistance to freezing and thawing when concrete is critically saturated. NRMCA's CIP 2 on scaling connects exterior surface performance to the mixture, finishing, curing, moisture, freezing exposure, and de-icing chemicals.
Those references support a project specification, not a durability promise. The quote should identify the applicable mixture and exposure requirements, curing method, forecast review, weather-protection responsibility, access restrictions, and conditions that could change the placement date. Decorative washing and sealing steps should be scheduled around the selected system and manufacturer instructions.
Confirm Permits and Design Review for the Actual Scope
Park City's building permit guidance says a building permit is needed unless the work is exempt under the adopted building or residential code. It also identifies separate review paths for work involving public right-of-way, utilities, drainage, grading, historic districts, or other planning requirements.
That is not a categorical statement about every patio. Jurisdiction, location, attachments, grading, structural features, and the broader project can change the approval path. Before comparing totals, document who will confirm permit and design-review requirements, who prepares any required drawings, which fees are included, and which owner or general-contractor responsibilities remain outside the concrete quote.
Compare Written Inclusions and Exclusions
A buyer-useful quote makes assumptions visible. Use the same checklist for each proposal:
- measured area, geometry, borders, steps, and transitions;
- demolition, excavation, haul-off, disposal, and restoration limits;
- site access, delivery method, staging, mobilization, and phasing;
- subgrade treatment, base material, compaction, and verification;
- elevations, drainage path, and construction runoff controls;
- slab, edge, step, isolation, and reinforcement design;
- pattern, color, release, texture, sealer, samples, and approvals;
- joint types, layout, method, timing, and pattern coordination;
- mixture requirements, curing, weather protection, and access control;
- permits, design review, drawings, inspections, and fee responsibility;
- exclusions, allowances, unknown-condition process, cleanup, and closeout.
If one proposal omits a line, ask whether the work is excluded, carried elsewhere, or still unknown. The lowest-looking total may simply describe less work. A reliable project estimate is the written scope tied to field measurements and agreed selections, not a universal online price.
